Information on changes due to customs regulations adopted in the United States of America
August 26, 2025

Magyar Posta Plc. informs its retail and business customers that the possibility of using services for forwarding consignments containing goods to the United States of America (USA) will be temporarily suspended from August 27, 2025.

In its presidential decree of July 30, 2025, concerning customs regulations, the USA changed the so-called “de minimis” threshold, which means that customs duties must also be paid on consignments containing goods that can currently be sent duty-free with a value under 800 US dollars, regardless of their value or country of origin. This decree enters into force on August 29, 2025.

The implementation process of the new US customs regulation differs from international postal regulations and affects all posts worldwide. Critical issues and processes related to the implementation of the regulation—such as the collection of customs duties, the data to be collected, and cooperation with the US Customs and Border Protection—are not yet clearly defined.

Due to the unresolved details, several airlines—such as Lufthansa and Air Serbia—have announced that they have completely stopped traffic towards the USA. At the same time, there are airlines that undertake the transport of consignments not containing goods.

Because of the new regulations and the restriction of air transport, numerous international posts—including the German, Spanish, Slovenian, Lithuanian, Czech, and Austrian posts—have suspended their traffic towards the USA.

For the reasons mentioned above, Magyar Posta has decided that from August 27, 2025, it will suspend the possibility of using services for consignments containing goods directed to the USA. The measure affects consignments posted within the framework of the following postal services, regardless of value:

  • priority and non-priority international postal parcels;
  • international EMS;
  • priority and non-priority international letters containing dutiable content.

Consignments containing documents or private letters may still be sent.

It is important that the suspension does not apply to consignments containing documents only; their posting and delivery to the USA continue without interruption.

Magyar Posta—similar to other European posts—continuously consults with international organizations in order for the services to restart as soon as possible.

Beyond the USA, the suspension also affects the following territories: American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Marshall Islands, Palau, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Wake Island.

The company will immediately inform its customers if the details or scope of the measure change.
