Saab Extra SCL (CAN Changer) – 9-3 SCL emulator

SCL Emulator and Comfort turn signal

Module developed to prevent one of the critical issues with the NG Saab 9-3. Its old name was CAN Changer, but in 2025 we renamed the product to Saab Extra SCL.
It helps prevent the electronic steering lock malfunction, avoiding a situation where the car becomes unstartable and allows the repair of a faulty steering lock. It is applicable to all Saab 9-3 models produced after 2003. Self-learning, no TEC2 required for installation.

What is the SCL?

The SCL, or steering column lock, is a safety component of the car. It is a complex electronic steering lock that prevents the steering wheel from being turned when the car is locked.

This small, cube-shaped component is mounted on the steering column and works closely with one of the car’s critical safety modules, the CIM (Column Integration Module), and the ISM (Ignition Switch Module). If any of these fail, the car will not start.

Most of the failures are due to the SCL. This component contains a microprocessor and two electric motors. In most cases, mechanical component failure leads to the malfunction of the SCL module.

What happens if the failure occurs?

The key cannot be turned, and the “Steering lock malfunction” error message appears on the SID display. Not only will the steering lock engage, but the car will also become unstartable.

How can it be repaired?

Repairing the SCL is complicated, as the failure usually occurs when the lock is engaged. However, the SCL module can only be removed from the steering column when it is in the unlocked position. If it is locked, removal is only possible by damaging the steering column. Official repair involves replacing the entire steering column along with the SCL module.

How can the failure be prevented?

Unfortunately, even in the best-maintained Saab 9-3, this issue can still occur, making prevention practically impossible. Typically, irreversible starting failures occur when the battery is weak or drained.

To prevent the steering column lock (SCL) failure, we have developed a special self-learning Saab Extra SCL emulator module.

How does the SCL emulator work?

The Saab Extra SCL emulator connects to the original wiring, communicates with the vehicle’s computers, and sends appropriate messages, simulating the presence of a fully functional SCL module.

How to fit the SCL emulator?

The Saab Extra SCL emulator is self-learning, meaning it doesn’t need to be paired with the system using any additional tools. It can be installed at home. First, connect it to the factory wiring harness and then to the existing, already paired, factory SCL module, from which it will learn the necessary settings. Afterward, the original SCL module can be removed. It is important that the Saab Extra SCL emulator is only compatible with cars that have a paired SCL-CIM-ISM system.

What is the downside of the SCL emulator?

The Saab Extra SCL emulator is merely an electronic module and does not perform any mechanical locking, meaning the steering wheel will remain turnable even when locked.

Who should consider using the SCL emulator?

The Saab Extra SCL emulator is recommended for users who either cannot obtain a factory SCL module or want to continue using their Saab while waiting for a replacement. It is also suggested as a substitute if the SCL fails.

What if the failure has already occurred?

n most cases, the Saab Extra SCL emulator can still be used even if the failure has occurred. Since most of the internal failures are mechanical, the factory module can still communicate, but it cannot release the lock. The communication remains intact, allowing the SCL emulator to be taught, and thus the car can be started. However, removing the locked module usually requires damaging the steering column, meaning the faulty lock mechanism must be forcibly removed. Using the Saab Extra SCL can help prevent this issue.

Is a TEC2 or PC required for the installation?

No, no tools are needed. The Saab Extra SCL emulator is a self-learning Plug & Play device.

Does the Saab Extra SCL have any extra functions?

Yes, in addition to the SCL emulator function, the “comfort turn signal” feature can also be activated.

The module comes with a Wi-Fi accessible interface that allows this feature to be turned on or off. The Saab Extra SCL can be administered and updated via a mobile device.

Installation:

For vehicles with a still-functioning factory SCL module.

STEP 1 – Disconnect one of the battery terminals.

STEP 2 – Remove the cover under the dashboard on the driver’s side. Be careful, as the OBD connector is attached to the cover. Remove the OBD connector as well (25 Torx).

STEP 3. – Disconnect the plug from the factory SCL module. The connector is accessible from underneath, but it doesn’t come out easily. While pulling the connector out, press the sides to release the clips. The connector housing consists of two parts, and it’s possible that one part will come out first. Don’t worry, once it’s out, it can be reassembled.

STEP 4. – For the learning process, connect the Saab Extra’s cable connectors to both the SCL module and the factory cable.

STEP 5. – Attach the green CAN wire of the Saab Extra SCL to pin 1 of the factory OBD connector (GM CAN wire).

you can choose from three methods: either solder it to the cable, or simply push the cable next to pin 1 and secure it with tape, or secure it with a T-connector

STEP 6. – Reconnect the battery terminal.

STEP 7. – Turn on the ignition in the car. As soon as you insert the key into the ISM ignition slot, the Saab Extra SCL, in learning mode, will learn the original SCL data. A flashing green LED on the module will indicate this. (Even if you cannot turn the key, the learning process will still occur.)

STEP 8. – While the ignition is on (with the steering lock disengaged), unplug the Saab Extra SCL from the factory SCL module. You won’t need the factory module anymore.

STEP9. – The Saab Extra SCL is now ready for use.

Opció: Optional: If you wish to remove the inactive factory SCL module in the unlocked state, use a 5mm Allen key. The unlocked module can remain in place, as it cannot lock while driving.

SETUP

The Saab Extra SCL module has already been set up by us, so no further modifications are needed. However, if adjustments are required, follow these steps:

The Saab Extra SCL module settings can be configured via a WiFi AP connection. This means that no internet connection is necessary—the mobile device and the Saab Extra SCL module communicate directly using the WiFi protocol.

To enter WiFi mode:

  1. Ensure the engine is off but the ignition is on.
  2. Simultaneously press the brake and accelerator pedals, and switch the turn signal once to the left.
  3. The Saab Extra SCL will indicate WiFi mode with a green LED.
  4. On your mobile phone, select the SaabExtra SCL from the list of available WiFi networks. If prompted for a password, enter: 12345678.
  5. The setup interface will appear automatically.

The configuration is limited to enabling or disabling the Comfort Flash function. Other features cannot currently be modified.

On the web interface, you can view the Saab Extra SCL software version, the device serial number, and the Saab VIN where the device is installed. If the VIN is visible, it confirms that CAN-bus communication is functioning correctly, and the green wire is properly connected.

In case of a software update, the process must also be initiated here.
