Model:
Saab 9-5, 2001–2011
Issue:
The external side mirror does not move or only folds halfway when pressing the mirror folding button.

Diagnosis:
Many assume the problem lies with the mirror motor itself, but in reality, it is usually the mirror control electronics that fail. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not offer this component separately, so the standard solution was to replace the entire electric mirror unit, which is quite expensive. Since electric mirror folding is not essential, many owners chose not to repair it.
We have developed a modernized, microprocessor-based replacement for the original control electronics, which can be installed in place of the old one, restoring full mirror functionality.
Skill:
MEDIUM. Removing the mirror cover requires skill. Tools (for example, a soldering iron) and DIY skills required for installation.

Repair:
The repair is very simple: you just need to replace the old electronics found in the mirror housing with the SaabExtra MFU.
STEP 1. – First, remove the mirror glass by releasing the spring clip holding it in place. Then, carefully unclip the front cover of the mirror by releasing the four locking tabs with a screwdriver.
STEP 2. – The control electronics will now be visible on the front of the mirror frame. Remove it from its position. Cut each wire approximately 20 mm away from the unit.

STEP 3. – Solder the wires from the new control electronics to the cut cables. The new wires match the original factory colors, so there’s no risk of mixing them up—just match color to color. Use heat shrink tubing to insulate the soldered joints (the package includes).

STEP 4. – Insert the new electronics into the old slot. Divide the butyl adhesive (putty) included in the package into two parts. Use one half to secure the module, and the other half to fix the cables.

STEP 5. – Test the mirror; if everything works correctly, snap the cover back on. If necessary, repeat the process on the other side.
