In NG 9-3 circles, the question of how to modernize the factory head unit, where to get installation frames, and what the process of replacement entails often arises. Unfortunately, the matter is more complex than one might think; the conversion not only encounters mechanical obstacles, but also the disruption of the factory system is a complex task, with few perfect or elegant solutions. But that’s all over now; nothing needs to be replaced. You can keep the beautiful, high-quality factory system, and it’s even affordable. The BT Changer V5 is now capable of expanding the intelligent Bluetooth system for Saab 9-3 models manufactured between 2003 and 2006.
What to Know About NG 9-3 Audio
Between 2003 and 2006, 9-3 models were equipped with an optical fiber (MOST® – Media Oriented System Transport) audio system. This was considered cutting-edge technology at the time, but it turned out not to meet the attached expectations, and Saab switched before the major model refresh in 2006.
The audio modules are strung together on an optical chain with two fiber optic cable pairs. If the chain breaks, none of its elements work properly; for example, the indicator display also goes silent. It’s also interesting to note that what we might think of as the head unit is not; it’s an important central control module, containing neither a radio nor an amplifier. This is called the ICM, or Infotainment Control Module, of which three versions were made: one without a display (ICM1), one with a display and phone buttons (ICM2), and one with navigation (ICM3). These can be interchangeable, but for perfect operation, they need to be programmed with Tech2. The ICM is an indispensable part of the car, translating and managing data from four different speed bus systems (I-BUS, P-BUS, O-BUS, C-cable), as well as containing lists of all the control modules in the car. For example, when reading error codes, Tech2 always starts conversing with the ICM to find out which control modules should be present in the vehicle. It’s understandable that the ICM cannot be omitted, and any head unit cannot be installed in its place. Once removed, the car cannot be started again. Therefore, upgrading the HI-FI system in these 9-3 models is either impossible or very complicated.
Bluetooth Expansion
It’s practically impossible to intervene in the factory optical system, so for Bluetooth expansion, we use the direct analog line input (AUX) of the audio system. With a special solution, we developed a unique Bluetooth expansion with minimal external intervention. Nothing needs to be replaced; the BT Changer module needs to be connected to the car with a cable harness. With a little skill, the expansion can be done at home. After configuring the BT Changer via WI-FI, it can be used immediately.
Attention! To operate, the audio input of the EHU must be activated with TEC2. If your car already has audio preparation (a jack plug is in the compartment under the armrest), then this operation is not necessary.
Compatibility
The BT Changer works with all factory audio systems and all three ICM modules.
Connection
The BT Changer cable harness must be connected to the ICM and the EHU module with connectors. The installation guide describes the steps in detail. If there was already an installed AUX system in the car, it must be disconnected; unfortunately, Bluetooth and AUX cannot work together.
Operation
The BT Changer module must be activated from the steering wheel controls or with the ICM DISK button, as if switching to the AUX input. This establishes a Bluetooth connection between the mobile device and the audio system; the BT Changer icon and metadata appear on the SID display. Volume and track control can also be done from the steering wheel controls. Other configuration options are not currently possible with this model.
