9-3 facelift (2007-) and 9-5 (2006- )

The BT Changer regardless of the type, can be used for all Saabs that have a black Fujitsu head unit in the factory. It is also suitable for single-disc CD and CD-Changer versions.

Principle of operation

For these models, the BT Changer simulates the operation of the factory satellite radio. In addition to the AM and FM channels, the XM channel appears, to the line input of which the mobile device is connected via Bluetooth. All other functions of the head unit (e.g. CD, AUX) remain unchanged.

Installation

The satellite radio module is only made for the US/CA market, so its wiring is not installed in most Saab models. The BT Changer module can therefore only be connected to the system with a special connector. The installation is plug and play, you just have to connect the BT Changer cable harness between the head unit and the factory cables and it already works.

To use the hands-free mode, the factory 18-pin telephone connector (375) must also be connected.

SETUP

After installation, you need to set the head unit type via Wi-Fi connection.
Two options are available:

  • without navigation (NG 9-3/OG 9-5 2006-)
  • with USA navigation (NG 9-3 NAVI (US) 2007-

If you want to use the Hands-Free function, it must also be turned on.

Usage

The Bluetooth mode can be activated by switching to the XM channel with the RADIO BAND button. In this case, the metadata is displayed on the head unit display. By pressing the info button, we can set what we want to see on the display. Options: programmable text, artist, track title, style.
By pressing the REV or FWD button, the current metadata scrolls on the display.

A new mobile device can be added by long pressing the “SEEK more” button. In this case, the message “Pairing” is displayed, and successful pairing is confirmed by “pairing success”.

By long pressing the SEEK back button, we enter the WIFI mode (WIFI mode message is visible), where we can make some basic settings and update the device here.
If you see an exclamation mark (!), there is no connection between BT Changer and HU.
By scrolling the top right button, you can fast forward or rewind the music or podcast.

Steering wheel switch

The basic functions of steering wheel switches of types 9-3 and 9-5 differ from each other.

  • In the case of 9-5, the right-hand control can be used to adjust the volume and you can step the songs forward and backward.
In the case of a phone call, the left-hand button can be used to answer and reject or hang up the call.
  • In the case of the 9-3, it is only possible to adjust the volume (unfortunately, this is a feature of the factory system, other functions cannot be solved).
In the case of a phone call, the scroll button can be used to answer and reject or hang up the call.

A tip for use
We have experienced that the music sometimes mute out for 14 seconds during playback. Unfortunately, this is a software bug in the Fujitsu head units, not caused by the BT Changer. The solution is simple. The most reliable method is the following:

  1. In FM mode, manually tune to a frequency where no radio station can be received and only static noise is audible.
  2. Save this frequency to a preset button (for example, preset 6 by pressing and holding the button).
  3. Immediately after that, switch to the XM channel used for Bluetooth mode and save it as well (for example, to preset 1 by pressing and holding the button).
  4. Whenever you want to use Bluetooth mode, always switch first to preset 6 and then to preset 1. After this, the random muting issue will no longer occur.
